Best in State(s): Why the Top Places to Live are in New England

When looking for a place to live, look northeast! WalletHub’s 2022 list of Best States to Live In had four New England states in the top 15, with Massachusetts taking the top spot. To compile their list, WalletHub compared the states on 52 indicators of livability like housing costs, income growth, education rate, and quality of hospitals.

Massachusetts’s number one ranking beat out New Jersey, who had held the title for the last two years. New Hampshire bumped up to the 6th spot after an 8th place ranking last year. Maine saw the biggest jump though; the Pine Tree State jumped from 19th place in 2019 to 11th this year, with Vermont close behind in 12th.

Where did these New England states excel in the rankings? All four ranked in the top 10 for Education & Health and Safety. Additionally, Maine ranked second in the list of highest homeownership rates.

WalletHub isn’t the only publication to recognize New England excellence. Money just published their list of Best Places to Live, too. Included on that list are Somerville, MA; Milton, MA; South Burlington, VT; and Nashua, NH. Want to live in or close to one of these towns? Click through a few of our listings below.
