Tell us about the history of the house.

The house has been our home for 35 years and over that time has gone through many changes. It started its life over 100 years ago as a boarding house. When we bought it, we transformed one side into a house that we could live in while we gutted and rebuilt the other side. The original house had many small bedrooms, typical to a boarding house, and a small porch. The previous owner had built a large deck and that was about the only change to the original building. Since we have owned it, we have replaced every window, floor, heating system, bathrooms, and added decks off three bedrooms and dormers to the roof, just to name a few improvements. We have been in the process of planning additional improvements, but when we decided to sell, we knew that the next owner would want to put their personal touch on it.

What is most special about the house?

Cuttyhunk guest room - sliders to private porch

We can’t pick just one thing! The panoramic views are unmatched on the island, especially when seen through the one-of-a-kind hydraulic binoculars. It’s a jaw-dropping experience. Guests and family appreciate the privacy that their rooms have with large sliders that open to private decks and Vineyard Sound breezes, sounds, and views. One of the parts of the house that we will miss the most is the new custom butler’s pantry. It is a work of art by a master craftsman!

Tell us about the versatility of the house.

Broadway Ocean Views in Cuttyhunk

The house is durable to the elements and built for a large crowd. It’s a year-round home on a beautiful island that has been lived in and loved by multiple generations of family and friends. It is a house that you are not afraid to enter with sandy feet and a wet suit and can also be comfortably dressed up for a formal Thanksgiving meal at the dining room table. It is a great house for entertaining. We have had some amazing parties, holidays, and island gatherings throughout the year. It is also a cozy place to spend time as a family watching a movie by the wood stove in the living room or quietly reading in the study by the gas stove. The kitchen looks out onto Vineyard Sound and down the Elizabeth Islands. Just try not to get too distracted while cooking or washing dishes! The private full bath in the owner’s suite has a soaking tub with sunset views and a custom driftwood light. It was completely remodeled in 2019.

Why are you selling the house?

We have decided at this point in our lives that we are ready for a change. In the near future, we hope to buy our dream boat and view the coast from a little different perspective! Our “island home” will be a bit smaller but more mobile!
