Martha’s Vineyard:
Off-Season Cozy Times

Up- and Down-Island

Martha's Vineyard 3-house waterfront

Picture the life you’d lead at 14/22 Cataumet Avenue, this 3-house waterfront and water-privileged property in West Chop on Martha’s Vineyard.

One day, you may stop at a Main Street eatery for an al fresco brunch with friends, the next may call for a bike ride into town. Back home, your rolling lawn is the perfect place to practice chipping. You could even invite a golf pro to give you some tips.

The beauty of this property is that much of this lifestyle can be enjoyed year-round. Even the Mink Meadows Golf Course–less than a mile away–is open all year. But it’s the holiday season when the island (and this property) particularly shine.

First, It’s Time To Shop

In Vineyard Haven, shop local at LeRoux and Rainy Day, where there are unique discoveries for the Kris Kringle in you.

On Fridays in December enjoy music at the corner near the time-treasured jeweler, CB Stark. Pop into Leslie’s Drug Store for magazines, Green Room for the surfer, or Mardell’s Gift Shop for wonderful finds and all the party supplies you need.

Afterwards, attend a play or buy tickets around the corner at the award-winning Vineyard Playhouse: Fish Tales anyone? Art Show, too, in the Marilyn Meyerhoff Lobby.

  • Marthha's Vinyard Playhouse

Time for some whole grain bread and farm-to-table victuals? A trip up-island to North Tabor Farm and Grey Barn will serve you well.

While you’re up there, be sure to stop in at 7A before 3 pm for a Liz Lemon sandwich. Then, head to the old West Tisbury Post Office set in a Vineyard Trust building which features famed Alley’s General Store: purveyor of everything and accented with wide, olde floorboards.

Finally, get your culture groove at the Granary Gallery and Red Barn Antiques or back in Tisbury at the MV Museum, set on the hill gazing at the ever-changing Lagoon.

When you make it back to Cataumet Avenue, you’re coming home to a winterized main house with fireplaces perfect for several roaring fires. Just grab some twigs for kindling en route.

For a change of scenery, write greeting cards looking out at the sea in your 5-bedroom Beach House. It’s a large cottage, not winterized yet, with a sweet study and wood-burning fireplace complementing picture windows with a sweeping vista.

A guest in the cozy “honeymoon cottage” could join you for dinner, after a workout or sauna session in the small fitness building, weather permitting.

Head to the sandy beach out front with plaid blankets, hot cocoa, hot toddies, and family friends for a small bonfire (carry in/carry out) as the sun sets. Once night falls, keep your eyes focused upwards for some brilliant stargazing.

Best of all, this is a home in which your whole family will be comfortable. The main house has five bedrooms and three fireplaces.

Additionally, there’s a spectacular, high-ceilinged, yet welcoming and warm, Great Room overlooking the water where everyone can gather to talk, relax or play a game stored in one of the room’s four storage closets for board games.

When you need to find peace and quiet, retreat to the owner’s suite, located on a totally separate level just six steps above the Great Room. Here you can enjoy your own private bath and have the great room serve as its living room.
