What brought you to 942 Mere Point Road?

After my husband and I finished medical school, it was time to choose a community in the United States in which to live. One of the places we explored was Brunswick, Maine, a small, vibrant coastal town where my husband had attended Bowdoin College.

At the end of a long weekend of house hunting, having seen nothing to pique our interest, the real estate agent told us about a special property on the Mere Point peninsula. Upon visiting the site, we instantly fell in love. Since our desire was to find a place where, once home, we were “on vacation”, this country house, dock, and grounds truly fit the bill.

There are great on-and off-road trails for running, biking, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, and of course, swimming off the dock. We have sailed all over the world and the coast of Maine is one of the best. Mere Point peninsula is a perfect balance of peaceful country living with cultural activities and sporting events at Bowdoin College, shopping in quaint stores, year-round farmer’s markets, dining in many local restaurants, and nearby Portland. The Executive airport is just minutes away.

Do you have a favorite room in the house?

The solarium is one of my favorite rooms in the house. French doors lead into the solarium, which boasts an endless pool encircled by handmade tiles overlooking a blue stone patio, herb gardens, and Maquoit Bay. The view is unlike any other. It’s a truly peaceful and unique spot.

What specific improvements have been made to the property?

The massive 1843 barn and guest wing were meticulously restored in the late 1980s and early 1990s at the time the house was constructed by noted architect Anthony Jackson of Brunswick, Maine and Cambridge, Massachusetts. He also designed additions in the 2000s, including the solarium with the endless pool, radiant heat flooring, an open-concept gourmet kitchen, and the master bedroom suite overlooking the ocean.

Please provide us with any history that may be of interest to a prospective buyer.

This is one of the properties of the master shipbuilding family, the Skofields. Ships were designed, built, and then launched into Maquoit Bay in the 1800s. Huge granite foundation stones and bricks from an even older house are in the woods on the grounds. Some were used for the construction of the present house, landscaping steps, and garden paths. Architect Anthony Jackson built the house for his own family residence, later selling it to us in the 1990s.

Why should someone buy this property?

Sea breezes are stirring as I write; white caps break the blue waters of the bay beyond granite outcroppings. The sun has risen over Mere Point Bay and the eastern shore of the peninsula is visible from our front windows. Our meadows slope down to the western shore where sunsets are fantastic. When we swim off the dock in the summer, or cross-country ski on the frozen bay in the winter, eagles, great blue herons, osprey, and migrating birds soar overhead. Sailing through and beyond the islands of Casco Bay, we see whales, seals, and dolphins.

Going by power boat to dinner, either Down East or to Portland, is a great way to entertain in the summer. Paul’s Marina provides deep water moorings for power boats and sailing yachts and is just three minutes further down the peninsula. It also has a penny candy store for kids, friendly locals, lobster rolls, and ice cream. We keep kayaks, paddle boards, and a Boston whaler out back in Eider Cove.

More than anything else, the right buyer would experience country living and the convenience of cultural offerings of a college town, Portland, and other quaint coastal villages. There is a plethora of restaurants in Brunswick and Portland. Our favorite local dining spot is Tao Yaun. The chef and owner, Cara Stadler, serves exquisite small plates using locally-sourced ingredients.

Why are you selling?

My husband and I have another home closer to Boston. Now that our children are grown, we plan to spend much of each year sailing.
