Great New England Equestrian Destinations: A Glimpse into New Hampshire’s Horse Country

The landscape of Robert Frost, with green-shuttered white clapboard houses, white mountains, and rolling meadows, is the backdrop for an active equestrian community – from top dressage trainers to vibrant hunt clubs and avid eventers and jumpers. NH’s current use tax program encourages open space by reducing taxes on undeveloped land, a great advantage for those seeking large acreage farms, privacy, and NH’s income tax advantages. Current use also allows for passive recreation on enrolled land, providing unrivaled riding opportunities. Yankee thrift, combined with an active statewide conservation effort, helps protect NH’s rural character and offers vast areas of open land.

Diverse in both history, culture, and geography, favorite spots include Canterbury’s Shaker Village, Currier Museum of Art and both the highest peak in the Northeast (Mt. Washington) and the world’s second most climbed mountain (Mt. Monadnock). A strong art scene is stewarded through organizations such as the League of NH Craftsmen and the Sharon Arts Center (Peterborough). An enduring summer-stock theater tradition can be found throughout the state including the Peterborough Players, New London Barn Playhouse, and Barnstormers Theater in Tamworth (home of Fleetwood Farm). The Barnstormers Theater is the oldest summer theater in the state, founded by Francis Cleveland, son of Grover Cleveland.

The equestrian properties featured here share easy access to the Greater Boston area combined with rural seclusion and surprisingly sophisticated local amenities. Peterborough (home of Shadow Fox Farm) has one of our favorite gourmet restaurants and specialty food markets: Twelve Pine. And Tamworth is home to the incredibly hip Lyceum and micro-distillery which produces farm-to-bottle spirits.
