Sheephead Island, off Deer Isle in Maine, was recently featured in Elite Traveler as one of The Best Private Islands for Sale in the USA. With thousands of islands in the U.S., from the northernmost reaches of Alaska to the southern tip of Key West – in lakes, rivers, and the oceans – there’s a number of options. Elite Traveler scoured through all of them and selected seven of the best private islands available for sale. Topping the list is Sheephead Island. Read on to find out why it’s so spectacular.
The largest of the islands featured by Elite Traveler, Sheephead Island includes 65± pristine acres, two residences, a boathouse and an artist’s studio. Sited just off the village of Sunset on the western shore of Deer Isle, the island offers stunning views in all directions. With a deep-water dock, a float, and a mooring on the northeast lee of the island, there is ample space for yacht moorage and protection from most winds and prevailing seas. During low tide, the island can be accessed by a four-wheel drive vehicle over an exposed sand bar.
Sited on a narrow part of the northwestern side of the island, a charming path lined with Lupine and Rugosa Roses (in season) leads the way to the main residence. The house is a classic New England Colonial with spacious, light-filled rooms, five bedrooms, comfortable living areas and magnificent panoramic views, including western sunset views over Penobscot Bay and the Camden Hills.
The island also has a four-bedroom Contemporary house, located in a private setting away from the main residence. With an open floor plan, beautiful ocean views and a private beach, this home allows guests their own space to relax and unwind.
Sheephead Island features over 13,000± feet of spectacular and varied shorefront, including miles of interesting ledge, tidal pools, and broad sand beaches. The interior of the island is equally stunning with trails through bucolic fields and forest, and there’s a one-acre swimming pond hidden away in the woods in the middle of the island.
LandVest has a history of selling the finest waterfront properties, including a number of private islands. As Joseph Sortwell in the Camden, Maine office said, private islands, accessible only by boat, afford owners the opportunity to “create your own kingdom just minutes from the mainland or miles offshore.” Below is a selection of our recent activity.
Sheep Island – Owls Head, ME – Sold
Sheep Island is a 59± acre uninhabited island sanctuary with 11,000± feet of shorefront in West Penobscot Bay and spectacular views in all directions. The island’s name and its rich soil are a testament to its agricultural heritage; it was used for farming in the 1800s, and today the undeveloped island is a refuge for a variety of wildlife. The landscape is mostly forest with dramatic bluffs, interesting ledge, idyllic coves and pocket beaches.
Ram Island – Saint George, ME – Sold
Located a stone’s throw from the mainland in Wheeler Bay, this 5± acre island has a charming four-bedroom residence designed around a central courtyard. There are walking paths, two beaches, and spectacular views.
Clark Island – Saint George, ME – Sold. Record Sale.
Clark Island was purchased by Maine Coast Heritage Trust last year. The island, comprising 120± acres of undeveloped land, is connected to the mainland by causeway at the end of a small peninsula in St. George. It offers beautiful forests, open meadows, walking paths, granite quarries, stone walls and historic foundations, and over three miles of waterfront with bold frontage, beaches, tidal pools and historic wharves, all available to the public.
