As the temperatures cool down and the crowds fade away, autumn can be a great time to explore Cape Cod. The Cape is not just a summer destination. The changing season is spectacular and there is plenty yet to explore. The scenic trails of Cape Cod offer a quality outdoor experience whether you’re traveling by foot, bicycle, or on horseback. We encourage you to go out and enjoy the fall before winter nudges us indoors. Horseback Riding: Riders can enjoy miles of trails along several sections of the shoreline. Sandy Neck Beach Park in Barnstable has horse trails along sandy beaches, dunes, marshes, and maritime forests. The Cape Cod National Seashore allows year-round horseback riding on the West and Sunset Horse Trails, and from October to May, the Herring Cove Trail and all saltwater beaches are open to horseback riding. Biking: The Cape Cod Rail Trail follows a former railroad right-of-way for 22 miles through the towns of Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet. Its paved surface, few hills, and well-marked automobile crossings make it ideal for cyclists. You can venture through the fall foliage or hop off the trail and visit the beach. Walking: The Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary provides unequaled beauty on the hillsides and shorelines overlooking the harbor. Extensive trails bring you to a panoramic salt marsh, sandy barrier beach, and pine woodlands, each attracting a wide array of wildlife. The sanctuary features an award-winning “green” nature center with numerous exhibits and aquariums. After you’ve worked up an appetite biking, walking, or riding, you should check out any of these great fall food festivities: the Ocean to Table Celebration, a Wine and Music Wednesday, or the CHOPP GREEN Series: Healthy Holiday Cooking Concepts. |
